HyCoRe - Unasys are seeking collaboration

About HyCoRe

HyCoRe brings together the expertise of Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), Arup, Unasys, Kinewell Energy, Newcastle University, National Gas and Northern Power grid (NPG).

HyCoRe is an ambitious and crucial endeavour in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Focusing on integrating a multi-vector energy system into existing complex infrastructure, particularly in a high potential area like Teesside for green hydrogen production, is timely and impactful.

Building on the successful SIF funded HyCoRe Discovery and ALPHA phases, HyCoRe BETA aims to demonstrate how the gas and electricity distribution systems can be jointly balanced within a multi-vector energy system. To support this endeavour, HyCoRe are seeking collaboration partners.

The project will demonstrate a resilient and robust renewable energy system, which reduces the cost of energy by efficiently managing renewable energy curtailment, grid connection congestion and energy storage management by using green hydrogen as an energy storage vector.

About Unasys

For 24 years, Unasys has supported and delivered nearly 50 major energy infrastructure projects worldwide. Our team of managers, engineers, and software architects facilitates the transfer of care, custody, and control of projects throughout key lifecycle stages: concept, engineering, construction, commissioning, and operation. Unasys has diversified and continues to grow within the emerging clean and renewable energy sectors, working with clients such as Equinor, Premier Oil, GDF, and CEPSA. The company brings together best practices, skills, and experience from the Oil and Gas industry. Our extensive multi-sector experience led to an invitation to join the HyCoRe project in early 2023.

Unasys are providing advanced simulation and modelling tools through their Navitas portal to optimise the integration process, assess feasibility, and analyse potential scenarios for the project's success. Unasys Navitas employs game engine software to craft an immersive, collaborative, and interactive digital replica of the Teesside Industrial complex. This innovative approach enables the amalgamation of data within the digital twin, empowering simulations that streamline decision-making processes and foster enhanced collaboration among stakeholders. The Teesside digital twin envisioned for HyCoRe serves as a versatile platform, facilitating virtual exploration and effortless modification.

With this digital replica, stakeholders can assess various scenarios, projecting hydrogen usage, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Moreover, it serves as a tool for community engagement, design review, construction management, progress tracking, energy network optimisation, and master planning. This expanded functionality extends beyond the design and construction phases to encompass ongoing asset management. Please see our film & documents below.

Working on this project will encompass several key areas, such as technology development, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, life cycle management, and stakeholder engagement. We are currently inviting expressions of interest from developers and contractors who are eager to contribute to the BETA phase through collaboration. In exchange, they will gain access to tools and support from the HyCoRe team for their own development needs.
