About HyCoRe
HyCoRe is a vital and ambitious initiative driving the transition to sustainable energy solutions. By integrating a multi-vector energy system into existing complex infrastructure, particularly in a high-potential region like Teesside for green hydrogen production, it addresses critical challenges with timely and transformative impact.
HyCoRe brings together the expertise of Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), Arup, Unasys, Kinewell Energy, Newcastle University, National Gas and Northern Power grid (NPG).
HyCoRe seeks to showcase how gas and electricity distribution systems can be seamlessly balanced within a multi-vector energy framework. The project aims to establish a resilient and efficient renewable energy system that lowers energy costs by optimising renewable energy curtailment, alleviating grid congestion, and enhancing energy storage through the use of green hydrogen as a storage vector.
A game changer: The role of Unasys
Unasys leverages advanced simulation and modelling tools through their Navitas portal to optimise integration processes, evaluate feasibility, and analyse potential scenarios critical to the project’s success. Using game engine software, Navitas creates an immersive, collaborative, and interactive digital replica of the Teesside Industrial Complex. This innovative digital twin consolidates data, enabling simulations that streamline decision-making and enhance stakeholder collaboration. The envisioned Teesside digital twin for HyCoRe offers a versatile platform for virtual exploration and seamless modification.
With this digital twin, stakeholders can evaluate scenarios involving hydrogen usage, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Additionally, it serves as a powerful tool for community engagement, design review, construction management, progress tracking, energy network optimisation, and master planning. Its capabilities extend beyond design and construction, encompassing ongoing asset management. The project addresses key areas such as technology development, infrastructure planning, regulatory compliance, lifecycle management, and stakeholder engagement.
